Bodhi Linux ARM Beta Release for Genesi Smartbook

Edit/Update: You can find the latest release here -> http://www.bodhilinux.com/downloads_mobile.php

Much to my fiancée's dismay my little Genesi Smartbook has been occupying much of my time of the late. In fact, just six days ago I posted about how to get an early build of a Bodhi ARM file system for the Smartbook.

Today I am happy to announce a more functional release for the Genesi. Audio now works and permissions have been sorted out so the normal user can shutdown the system. Beyond these bug fixes this release (and future releases) are coming in an easier install media. We will now be providing two different .img files for the Smartbook, you can find them for download here.

One of the images is a live image. Use this one if you want to simply run Bodhi from your SD card. The second is an installer image. Simply boot it up, follow the on screen prompts and Bodhi will be installed to the internal SSD of the Smartbook. IMG files allow for simply loading these images onto an SD card with a single command:

sudo dd if=myfile.img of=/path/to/sdcard bs=1M

You can also load the image onto your card via a GUI if you are into that sort of thing. Please note this command may take five minutes or longer to complete. Once you get the system online the user name is "bodhi" with password of "bodhi". Sudo is setup for this user by default.

Next on my ARM todo list is to get our App Center working and putting together a formal tutorial for getting Bodhi running on the HP Touchpad.

Finally, if you run into any issues please let us know in the Genesi section of our forums.

  2. Excellent, Jeff! Love the name... the 'h' _is_ silent, is it not?

Shows what the Bodhi community can do, will be useful for VMs, and a handy demo on DVD/USBstick too.

Might also appeal more to some reviewers, maybe?

    All the best, Flymo

  3. Some news about via8650 (WonderMedia8650)?. Can I try Debian/Bodhi in this device?

    1. Ask your device maker if they support alternative operating systems. ARM hardware all varies so much it is impossible for us to support to many of them.

    2. Tks for att, and try to find more information and put in arm forum,

  4. May I ask something else, can I install bodhi on adam of notion ink? I looked in the forum and there is no news for some time now. I could take the risk to try that on my adam but first I should be sure that I will be able to restore android in case of failure. Is there any way to do that?

    1. Pretty much every ARM device is different - so without personally having a Notion Ink to play with it is impossible for me to tell you what you can/can't do with the device with regards to Bodhi.

  5. Thanks for all of the work bringing my favorite Bodhi to the Genesi Smartbook!

I'm having real difficulty maintaining a consistent WiFi connection with this image. The hardware seems solid, especially with the Debian armhf image. Any suggestions?

Also, any plans to port Enlightenment over to armhf?

    1. I haven't had anyone report issues with the wifi connection - I personally have used mine on over a dozen different connections ranging from WEP to PEAP and they all work AOK.

As for ARMHF - we might try to move to this at some point, but we support a wide range of devices with our mobile build - not all of which support ARMHF.

  6. Hello Jeff,

I would like to ask you. Is it possible to install Debian/Bodhi on MIPS tablet Novo 7 from Ainovo ? Is linux support for MIPS any better than ARM ?

And there is open-source driver for adreno graphics coming, do you think it'll be easier to install linux on devices with adreno graphics from now?

Thank you, and thank you for your work. Bodhi is great.

    1. Please read the comments before yours (and the post!)

Bodhi does not determine hardware support for ARM devices - how open source friendly your device is determines this. If Debian runs on your device then you can easily add the Bodhi repo to it!

    2. Uff sorry for bothering you then. It was just a friendly question.

    3. It isn't a bother - it is simply a question that has been address over and over and over again :)

  7. I have a question. Which kernel version is the Bodhi Linux based on?
I have a smartbook from Hercules (Hercules /Guillemot EX HD) it has nearly the same Hardware as the Genesi MX Desktop / Smartbook. if it has a kernel 3.x I would try to port this piece to the hercules. At time I try to port the ArchlinuxARM but this is more tricky cause the hardwaredrivers are not all really open source. At Time there is only a not self makeable Kernel 2.6.35.4 without tun devices. So it is impossible to make any vpn-clients work. hmmm
